Upwing Energy is developing and commercializing first-of-their-kind Subsurface Compressor Systems (SCS) for natural gas extraction. Our development efforts combine exciting engineering challenges in turbomachinery; rotordynamics; high-speed and high-power electric motors; power electronics; industrial automation; aerodynamics; structural, thermal and fluid flow simulations; mechanical design and design-for-manufacturability.
The ideal Systems Engineer will have a strong and varied technical background; they must have the desire and capability to drive the development of the company’s Subsurface Compressor System (SCS). This position will own the surface control equipment subsystems, including requirements definition and validation through design, fabrication, testing and deployment into gas wells and post-test/deployment analysis. Throughout the process, the Systems Engineer will provide design, fabrication and test contributions to the team from a systems perspective as well as work with the engineering and test teams to ensure requirements are validated in the test regime.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Fundamentally understands full system operating principles, risks and benefits
- Interfaces with engineering, operations, test and field deployment to design, build, test, deploy and recover tools to understand what improvements need to be made to extend operating life and enhance performance
- Sets priorities in relation to overall tool design, build and test for surface control equipment subsystems
- Participates with engineering in product improvements and qualification
- Owns requirements for the surface control equipment subsystems at all levels –subsystem, components, ancillary equipment, etc.
- Works with the greater engineering team to define and refine requirements
- Communicates expectations internally
- Technical oversight of design of the surface control equipment subsystems
- Provides design contributions to the core engineering team
- Leads Failure Modes Effects Analysis (FMEA) and Root Cause Corrective Action investigations of fielded surface control equipment subsystems
- Works with team members to define required tests and approves test plans
- Works with technicians to execute test plans and resolve testing issues
- Reports updates of activities and status to teams and management regularly
Skills, Experience, Education, and Abilities:
- Mechanical Engineering degree
- A minimum of 5 years of engineering experience with a minimum of 3 years of Systems Integration engineering experience
- Experience with rotating machinery, turbomachinery, power electronics or industrial automation of complex systems is strongly preferred
- System integration experience, specifically with electromechanical systems, is strongly preferred
- Strong familiarity with a wide range of ancillary equipment and control/automation of that equipment is a plus
- SolidWorks experience is preferred
- Strong written and oral communication skills
- Ability to evaluate options, propose solutions and make decisions when required
- Must be capable of identifying and advocating vigorously for system interests in the development process

Physical Demands/Work Environment:
Most time will be spent in an office environment or shop floor. Personal protective equipment is required in designated areas. Minimal travel will be required to support products in the field.
