Our Motivation

What Drives Our Organization

We are positively impacting the economics, security and environmental implications of global energy production.

Our Purpose

The reason we exist.

To secure global energy needs in an economically and environmentally sustainable way.

Our Vision

The goal of our purpose.

To enable all people to have access to affordable heat, fuel, electricity and produced goods while maintaining a healthy environment for ourselves and future generations.

Our Mission

Our Foundation

Wise Beyond Our Years

Upwing Energy is the leading energy tech innovator and service company for responsibly sourced natural gas.  Upwing provides a comprehensive integrated End2End (E2E) service, leveraging innovative subsurface compression technology to help natural gas companies of all sizes boost the production and recoverability of natural gas from existing wells while lowering emissions intensity. The company was formed in 2016 as an innovative offshoot of Calnetix Technologies, a recognized industry leader in high-speed systems, supplying high-speed permanent magnet motors and generators, magnetic bearings and variable speed drives (VSDs) over the past two decades to a wide variety of industries throughout the world.

Our Facility

facility

Upwing Energy’s headquarters and product operations facility is located on a multi-acre campus in Cerritos, California.

Upwing Energy headquarters has a state-of-the-art test facility for its Subsurface Compressor System (SCS). Test cells are used to verify and validate the unique operating conditions of the SCS. Upwing engineers use bench testing and containment rigs to validate each module independently, measure system performance and functionally test full assemblies. Together, the test cells enable simulation of the conditions experienced by the SCS downhole and allows for the creation of a unique performance map that can be used for diagnostic and prognostic health monitoring once a unit is installed in a client’s well.

Upwing’s Texas office, located just west of the Energy Corridor in Houston, serves as a base for the company’s service operations and technical inventory.

Our Intellectual Property

Patent Wall

Upwing Energy has been granted core technology patents by affiliate company Calnetix Technologies for exclusive use in the downhole rotating space. These core technologies include permanent magnet (PM) machines, magnetic bearings, variable speed drives (VSD) and system level controls. Other intellectual property provided by Calnetix includes proprietary PM design tools and manufacturing processes. In addition, Upwing has filed its own system level and application related patents for downhole rotating devices, including for its Subsurface Compressor Systems (SCS) and Magnetic Drive Systems (MDS). The company has been issued over 50 U.S. patents and 16 foreign patents to date with additional filings allowed or pending.

Our Health and Safety

Upwing Energy is dedicated to ensuring the health and safety of all employees and visitors in our facility. Upwing has a standing safety committee to address safety concerns and maintain OSHA compliance on our campus. All Upwing employees receive extensive training on emergency evacuation procedures, safety precautions, identified hazards and necessary personal protective equipment instructions. All visitors are informed of the necessary safety protocols and procedures during their visit.

History of Upwing Energy

Learn more about what inspired the formation of Upwing Energy and how the SCS was brought to life.

Background

The idea behind the SCS took shape prior to the formation of Upwing Energy. Herman Artinian, now Founder and CEO of Upwing Energy, was serving as the Managing Director of Access Energy, a Calnetix subsidiary.

During a visit to an oil and gas site for the installation of Access Energy's Thermapower system, pressure and flow behavior of hot brine produced within the well became a focal point of discussion. These conversations led Herman to speak with operators about how well pressure is managed over time, particularly as wells mature, and about the practical limits of surfacebased solutions.

Concept

Surface compression had long been used to move gas into pipelines, but those discussions reinforced a key point that production ultimately depends on drawdown - lowering pressure at the wellbore so gas can flow from the reservoir into the well.

This led to a simple question; instead of compressing gas at the surface, what if compression could happen downhole right at the source? Placing a compressor near the formation offered a way to directly influence drawdown rather than relying solely on surface equipment.

Early Stages

Leveraging Calnetix’s expertise in electric motors, power electronics, controls and advanced mechanical systems, an early proof-of-concept demonstration validated the idea of subsurface compression.

Upwing Energy was then formed in 2016 as an affiliate company of Calnetix Technologies to focus on the development of subsurface compression systems for natural gas wells.

Results

From there, the focus shifted to improving gas recovery from existing wells in a way that is both economically and operationally efficient.

Decades of work by advanced turbomachinery engineers have resulted in Upwing’s Subsurface Compressor System (SCS). The SCS has now been installed in a number of countries and continues to provide meaningful increasing in production and recovery for gas well operators globally.
