Upwing Energy is developing and commercializing first-of-their-kind Subsurface Compressor Systems (SCS) for natural gas extraction. Our development efforts combine exciting engineering challenges in turbomachinery; rotordynamics; high-speed and high-power electric motors; power electronics; industrial automation; aerodynamics; structural, thermal and fluid flow simulations; mechanical design and design-for-manufacturability.
The ideal Director of Compressor Systems will have a strong analytical and development background in turbomachinery, including experience in designing and analyzing compressors. This position will own the compressor system, from design parameters provided by the front end engineering to compressor analysis, design, manufacturing, in-house testing/mapping and field performance. This will also include the compressor modelling tool development and improvement, manage the team focused on the compressor analysis and design, interface with operations on Compressor manufacturing and build through product operations and interface with the Field Group for inputs to drive the design and operational data to validate field performance.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Technical oversight of the compressor analysis and design from the system perspective, owns requirements for the Compressor at all levels – system, subsystems, components, ancillary equipment, etc.
- Guides team for Compressor design tool development and improvement, Compressor design and validation processes to meet customer operational requirements and directs projects that offer improves to the product
- Fundamentally understands compressor operating principles
- Interfaces with engineering, operations, test and field deployment to analyze, design, build, test and deploy tools to understand what improvements need to be made to more accurately predict and enhance Compressor performance
- Works with engineering in product improvements and qualification
- Communicates expectations internally
- Works with team members to define required Compressor tests and approve test plans, including participation in test stand development and requirements
- Works with technicians to execute compressor test plans and resolve testing issues
- Follow the requirements of Upwing Energy’s Quality Management System
- Oversees and improves CFD and Compressor performance modelling to develop internal capabilities, and put in place clear processes to optimize for the expected demand.
- Reports updates of activities and status to teams and management regularly
Skills, Experience, Education, and Abilities:
- Mechanical Engineering degree
- A minimum of 10 years of engineering experience with a minimum of 3 years of compressor analysis experience
- Computational Fluid Dynamics understanding with tools like ANSYS Fluent and ANSYS CFX
- Heat Transfer understanding with tools, such as ANSYS Mechanical
- Prior experience as a Functional Manager or Technical Product Manager
- Familiar with creating ERP system BOM’s & Routers, experience with Global Shop is a plus
- Industry experience in rotating equipment
- Knowledge of standard manufacturing processes for complex, precision turbo machinery: casting, printing, machining, milling, grinding, rotor balancing, mechanical and electrical assembly, inspection techniques, oil management systems (tubing, fittings, etc.) and pressurized assemblies
- Good interpersonal and interfacing skills (i.e. communicating well with people across different departments both internally and externally, resolving conflicts, leading teams and mentoring team members)
- Risk management mindset and the ability to lead multiple programs with strong attention to strategy, implementation and delegation
- Demonstrated initiative to explore alternative technology and approaches to solving problems
- Exceptional organizational skills, able to manage multiple work streams effectively and provide timely updates
- Additional computer skills: Microsoft Office Suite and Microsoft Project

Physical Demands/Work Environment:
- Most time will be spent in an office environment or shop floor. Personal protective equipment is required in designated areas. Minimal travel will be required to support products in the field.
